Watershed Planning Key in Corpus Christi

CORPUS CHRISTI - The Nueces River Authority would like to invite everyone in the Lower Nueces River watershed to attend the upcoming stakeholder meeting. Area landowners and citizens are crucial to a successful Watershed Protection Plan (WPP). The meeting on Tuesday, October 20, 2015, hosted by the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB), the lead agency in dealing with agricultural and silvicultural nonpoint source pollution issues and the Nueces River Authority (NRA), will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Hilltop Community Center located at 11425 Leopard Street in Corpus Christi, Texas.

This 39-mile reach of the Nueces River, between Lake Corpus Christi and the saltwater barrier dam at La Bonte Park, is the primary source of drinking water for the area. The watershed is approximately 116,862 acres within parts of Jim Wells, San Patricio, and Nueces counties. This waterbody is listed on the Texas Integrated Report for elevated levels of total dissolved solids. The soil and water conservation districts (SWCDs) in this watershed are the Jim Wells County SWCD, Nueces County SWCD, and San Patricio County SWCD. SWCDs serve as the beacon for the TSSWCB. SWCDs are a board of five directors who are elected by their fellow landowners.

"Water and knowledge are two of the most powerful forces that exist. As landowners of property that is fronted by the Nueces River, we appreciate the opportunity to be educated about how we can help to ensure the future and cleanliness of this vital water feature. When we know better, we do better," said Kris and Phil Johnston.

Funding for the development and support of the Lower Nueces River WPP is through a Clean Water Act grant provided by the TSSWCB and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
