Just outside of Alpine, nestled among fields of wheat and pastures of grazing cattle, a quiet hero has dedicated his life to caring for the land and safeguarding its future. N.M. Mitchell, the longest-serving director of the Rio Grande-Pecos River Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD), has reached an extraordinary milestone, 60 years of service.
Mitchell’s journey began in 1965, when as a young rancher, he was asked if he would be interested in joining the Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Directors. Inspired by the idea that individual efforts could lead to collective environmental benefits, Mitchell was appointed and joined the SWCD. Over the decades, his hands-on experience as a rancher shaped his decision-making, ensuring that the district's initiatives were both practical and impactful.
"When I first joined, conservation was a tough sell," Mitchell recalls. "But, I knew that if we didn’t take care of our soil and water, the land wouldn’t take care of us."
Mitchell’s contributions extend beyond technical expertise. Over the years, he has become a mentor to many in the community, sharing his knowledge and fostering a deep respect for conservation among younger generations. One of those he inspired most profoundly is his own son, Scott Mitchell.
Scott, now 61, grew up watching his father balance the demands of operating a ranch with his commitment to the SWCD. "Dad always made it clear that conservation wasn’t just a job, it was a responsibility," Scott says. "He taught me that we’re stewards of the land, and it’s our duty to leave it better than we found it."
Following in his father’s footsteps, Scott joined the Rio Grande-Pecos River SWCD, six years ago. The Mitchells’ partnership has been a source of inspiration to their colleagues. "Seeing N.M. and Scott work together is a reminder of what we’re here for," says Dawson Owens, TSSWCB Field Representative. "It’s about building a legacy of care for the land and passing that on."
During the 84th Annual Meeting of Texas Soil and Water Conservation District Directors held in Arlington, TX, Mr. Mitchell was recognized for his 60 years of service.
For N.M. Mitchell, the past 60 years have been a labor of love, a testament to his belief in the power of community and the importance of stewardship.
