Congressman Conaway Recognizes Runnels Soil and Water Conservation District

TEMPLE - Each year the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board (TSSWCB) and the Association of Texas Soil and Water Conservation Districts (ATSWCD) recognize and honor individuals that dedicate themselves to the conservation and management of renewable natural resources. The Runnels Soil and Water Conservative District was selected to receive the 2016 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District Award through the Texas Conservation Awards Program.

The Texas Conservation Awards Program began in the late 1970's to recognize the state’s conservationists and the vital role they play in managing Texas’ natural resources. The purpose of this program is to acknowledge, recognize, and honor individuals that dedicate their time and efforts to the conservation of renewable natural resources.

Organized in 1949, the Runnels Soil and Water Conservation District has provided a balanced and innovative conservation program to Runnels County. The District’s dedication to the goals of the organization are the driving force to improve and protect natural resources within the county.

The Runnels Soil and Water Conservation District is governed by an elected Board of Directors made up of local farmers and ranchers. A total of 102 years of service to Runnels County is what sets this district apart. David Ocker has served 40 years, C.J. Robinson Jr. - 28 years, Fred Wilde - 21 years, Bobby Myers - 11 years and Scott King - 2 years. In addition to the SWCD Board of Directors, this district has a dedicated support staff as well. Patti Robinson has been the District Clerk for over 40 years and Kay Mansell has served as the District Technician for 22 years.

Serving his sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, Congressman Mike Conaway represents 29 counties in Texas’ 11thCongressional District, including the cities of Midland, Odessa, and San Angelo. Conaway held a town hall meeting on Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at the Rock Hotel Heritage Center in Winters, Texas. During the meeting Conaway recognized the Runnels Soil and Water Conservation District as the 2016 Outstanding Soil and Water Conservation District in Texas.

Runnels SWCD is a strong supporter of conserving and protecting natural resources for the many generations to come. They will be recognized during the awards luncheon at the Annual Meeting of Texas Soil and Water Conservation District Directors on October 18, 2016 at the Waco Convention Center.
