Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Partnership brings Feral Hog Bounty Program to Watershed

The Geronimo and Alligator creeks watershed partnership has partnered with Guadalupe County and the Meadows Center for Water and Environment to deliver feral hog abatement and education to local landowners which also includes a bounty program.

Guadalupe County is a recent recipient of a grant from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service Wildlife Services to bring education and resources to the community to help water quality by reducing the feral hog population. As part of these efforts there will be a feral hog workshop Friday, August 10 at 9am in Seguin. The workshop will be hosted at the Guadalupe County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension office located at 210 E. Live Oak Street, Seguin.

“We believe feral hogs are having a negative impact on water quality in Geronimo Creek, and feel this program will cause an increased awareness, and will hopefully result in reducing their population numbers,” said Ward Ling, Watershed Coordinator with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

In 2008, the GBRA and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service received a Clean Water Act (CWA) 319(h) grant from the TSSWCB to develop a watershed protection plan(WPP) for the Geronimo and Alligator Creeks watershed. The Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Partnership was formed in 2010 to address the elevated levels of bacteria and nitrate-nitrogen and the plan was completed and accepted by EPA in 2012. Now the Partnership is working toward full implementation of the WPP.

In addition to the feral hog bounty program, the Geronimo and Alligator Creeks Watershed Partnership has been active in implementing the WPP by bringing educational programs, low impact development projects, OSSF projects and technical and financial resources to local farmers and ranchers as well as continuous water quality monitoring through the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. Funding for these implementation activities have been provided by the TSSWCB and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality through Clean Water Act §319(h) nonpoint source grant from the U.S Environmental Protection Agency.
