Development and Implementation of a Watershed Protection Plan for Lavon Lake

Lavon Lake Creek.PNG

Lavon Lake is the uppermost reservoir on the East Fork of the Trinity River and provides drinking water to over 1.6 million residents in North Texas. The 769-squre-mile watershed (492,095 acres) lies within the larger Trinity River Basin and includes parts of Collin, Fannin, Grayson, and Hunt Counties.  While Lavon Lake does not have any listed water quality impairments, two of its tributaries, East Fork of the Trinity River above Lavon Lake and Wilson Creek were listed in 2014 Texas Integrated Report of Surface Water Quality as being impaired for bacteria.

In 2016 North Texas Municipal Water District and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service received a Texas Nonpoint Source Grant from the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board to begin the process to develop a stakeholder driven Watershed Protection Plan (WPP) that would address the water quality impairments within the watershed.  Through this process, the Lavon Lake Watershed Partnership was formed, and the Lavon Lake Watershed Protection Plan was developed.  The plan was accepted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as meeting all requirements of EPA's nine element guidance for watershed based plans in November of 2017.  The full WPP can be found here.

The Watershed Protection Plan is now in the implementation phase and the Lavon Lake Watershed Partnership continues to be an active stakeholder group.  For more information about the WPP, or for upcoming meetings of the partnership, please visit North Texas Municipal Water District's Website, https://www.ntmwd.com/watershed-planning/.
